A wonderful experience

It has been a couple of weeks now since I got back to the Netherlands from a truly inspirational and intense experience. Not only did I get to see a part of the world that I have never been to before, I also got to know fourteen wonderful women from all over the world.
Fifteen women, ten nationalities, one common goal: to engage in meaningful dialogue in order to get rid of the misunderstandings of their respective countries and cultures. Connecting Cultures has provided the means and stage for this experience, but it was all up to the participating women to make the best out of this experience–which they did. Which we did.
At first, all of us were a bit shy and we really had to get used to each other, but that soon changed. In the course of five days in the desert of Oman we got to know and appreciate each other, not as a Spanish woman, nor as a Norwegian woman, nor as an Omani woman. Our nationalities didn’t matter much, since we realized that it is our humanity that binds us together.
The most important lesson I learned through this experience is not to underestimate the strength of powerful individuals. If we look at history, we can see that it is people like Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, and Martin Luther King–simple individuals with a vision– who shook the world to its foundation with their respective messages and determination. I feel it is now up to us, and up to you–the reader of this text–to be the changes we want to see in the world.
